There is certainly the valid argument I spoke of in one of my earlier blog entries that there are too many managers being employed and handsomely paid for jobs they can't actually do properly and you can see that in some of these 'auto chiefs'.  Henry Ford was an extremely odd auto chief who was generous to his employees in some ways but awful in other ways; had irrational prejudices (recruiting anti-union actions and being anti-semitic with being praised by Hitler) but was strongly anti-war.  

I know some MDs are accountants and so are aware of potential economic wastage but it could be said that the best MDs are those from Quality Assurance/Control because they can see all the parts of a company...
