'When Enough Is Enough' - Character Descriptions
Joe
Joe is an independent young man. Sometimes can be arrogant and appears quite distant. He lost his soul because he fell in love with someone - she was mortally ill so he made a pact with the Devil in exchange for her survival - so he's capable of being quite passionate and sometimes displays naivety and vulnerability.
The Devil
He's bored and can be dismissive - but he gets angry with the characteristics people portray of the Devil which he never fitted. He's likes to think he's much more inventive. As he says - humanity does a good enough job tempting themselves without his interference. That's not to say he doesn't enjoy it when people end up in his realm. He doesn't care if technically Joe might not be a "bad" person. He's just reduced to petty nastiness and gets his kicks from terrorising his subjects. He's an elegant and vain person with an underlying atmosphere of sadism.
The Devil's alter ego
He is young and muscular. His character is pretty much as the Devil's description - especially in being an elegant and vain person with an underlying atmosphere of sadism. He doesn't give the impression of being the Devil until the party scene.
Secubus 1
Very elegant; very sensual - and very aware of this effect upon men - except upon the Devil. She hates the Devil because of his potential to be nasty to her; she's also afraid of him. However, she is aware that he puts up with her just veiled hatred of him just to give him an excuse to be sadistic to her - but she can't cover her hatred of him.
Secubus 2
Similar to Secubus 1 except that she is more "natural" in her look and way of acting - at least until her final scene when she appears very like Secubus 1. She also strongly hates the Devil.
Ashley
He lives with his mother who dominates him as a result he is very unsure of himself and hesitant. He isn't used to other people other than his mother and her friends but she has taught him to be polite and so he feels compelled to make small talk with people.
Friend of Joe
He has a similar outlook to Joe.
Reporter
For a female part:
She is intelligent, and - despite constant setbacks - ambitious. However, she knows she not getting the breaks due to her male bosses. She also knows that she is in imminent danger of being sacked and replaced by a pretty, young brainless woman. This makes her quite vain and insecure about her presentation. She is looking for a more aggressive style and hopes against all the odds that one day she'll be successful. Even if that means being unscrupulous - this is how she fell to Hell - but of course like Ashley she doesn't know that - but may suspect this at the end of the film/play.
For a male part:
Intelligent and appears to be deeply conventional. His placid exterior hides an ambitious heart, which can be quite callous in the search for a good story. He's not afraid to tread on people to get a story - this is how he fell to Hell - but of course like Ashley he doesn't know that - but may suspect this at the end of the film/play.
Four stage hands
Wearing black. Make-up/masks are reminiscent of zombies. They also moan like zombies.
